Definition
A trial binder index is the master table of contents for the set of organized binders that the attorney relies on at counsel table throughout trial, housing pleadings, jury instructions, witness outlines, exhibit copies, deposition transcripts, and legal research. There is no single mandated format, but the paralegal typically organizes the binder by tab—pleadings, motions in limine, jury instructions, witness examination outlines, and exhibits—with a numbered index at the front of each volume so the attorney can retrieve any document within seconds. The paralegal assembles, labels, and cross-references every tab against the trial schedule, ensuring that deposition excerpts for impeachment are flagged, exhibits are in numerical order matching the exhibit list, and spare copies are available for the court and opposing counsel. A meticulously prepared trial binder is one of the most tangible ways a paralegal contributes to a smooth, professional trial presentation.
