Intake
Client intake memo — A privileged internal memo capturing client facts, goals, and initial legal issues at first contact. Conflict-of-interest check memo — A memo documenting the firm's conflict search results before accepting a new client or matter. Engagement / fee agreement — A written contract defining the scope of representation, fee structure, and client obligations.
Case Management
Case status / audit report — A periodic internal report summarizing all open matters, upcoming deadlines, and pending action items. Litigation timeline — A chronological chart of case events, court deadlines, and statutory cutoff dates for active litigation. Pleading index / case file index — A master index cataloguing every document filed or received in a matter with Bates or tab references.
Discovery Propounded
Deposition notice — A formal notice scheduling an oral examination of a party or witness under oath before a court reporter. Form Interrogatories (FROGs) — Judicial Council DISC-001 form questions served on an opposing party to obtain basic case facts. Requests for Admission (RFAs) — Written requests asking an opposing party to admit or deny specific facts, authenticity, or legal conclusions. Requests for Production (RFPs) — Written demands requiring an opposing party to produce documents, ESI, or tangible things for inspection. Special Interrogatories (SROGs) — Custom written questions drafted by counsel to obtain facts specific to the claims or defenses at issue.
Discovery Responses
FROG responses — Verified answers to Form Interrogatories served by opposing counsel within the statutory 30-day deadline. Meet-and-confer letter — A formal letter documenting counsel's good-faith effort to resolve a discovery dispute before filing a motion. RFP responses + privilege log — Written responses to document production requests plus a log of documents withheld on privilege grounds. SROG responses — Verified answers or objections to specially drafted interrogatories served by the opposing party.
Motions
Demurrer + memorandum — A pleading motion challenging the legal sufficiency of the opposing party's complaint or answer on its face. Motion to Compel Further Responses — A court motion asking the judge to order a party to provide complete or supplemented discovery responses. Statement of Damages — A document served on a defendant specifying the nature and amount of damages claimed by the plaintiff.
Trial Prep
Trial binder index — A tabbed organizational index for the attorney's trial binder containing all materials needed at counsel table. Trial subpoena (SUBP-001) — A court-issued command on Judicial Council form SUBP-001 compelling a witness to appear at trial. Witness & exhibit list — Court-required lists identifying all witnesses to be called and exhibits to be offered at trial.
Family Law
Custody parenting plan — A detailed written agreement or proposed order specifying the physical and legal custody schedule for minor children. FL-150 Income & Expense Declaration — Judicial Council form disclosing a party's monthly income, expenses, assets, and debts in family court. FL-160 Property Declaration — Judicial Council form listing all community and separate property assets and debts for equitable division. Request for Order (FL-300) — A motion on form FL-300 asking the family court to issue temporary or permanent orders on support or custody.
